We're almost there! Let's not give up now! This week, we'll tackle Step 6 of 8 Steps to a Productive Summer!

This week, please share with us at least one example of a game you enjoying playing with your students. Games can include online games, board games, indoor games, outdoor games, any kind of game, as long as it's fun! Please include the following when sharing your game(s):

  1. What level(s)?
  2. What is the target vocabulary?
  3. What is the target grammar?
  4. What is the cultural element?

For example, on our Descubre el español con Santillana site, you can find a variety of games for your classroom. One of the more popular ones is the "Drag & Drop" game, where students are asked to drag & drop phrases to make a story. This fun, interactive online game is a great way to get your students practicing their Spanish phrases!

Game 1:
Count Down

Level: Lower levels
Target Vocabulary: Numbers
Target Grammar: Can be adapted for any grammar topic but I just use it with numbers so the whole class can join in.
Cultural Element: Any cultural object can be used to hide.

Most of the games I play are kinesthetic in nature because I don't have access to any technology in my classroom.

Pick a student to wait outside of the room and pick an object to hide. The class yells “Entra” and the class begins a countdown from the number 30 at a normal level.
When the student comes closer to the hidden object the class counts a little louder. The kids actually love this silly game and it sharpens counting skills. It's fun for beginning of the year when I review numbers and classroom objects.

Game 2:
Sentence Charades

Level: Level I-IV
Target Vocabulary: Any new and old too be recycled.
Target Grammar: Correct sentence structure combined with parts of speech and vocabulary, both old and new.
Cultural Element: Can be any cultural element to fit the game.

Divide the class into 2 teams. Only 1-person presents a charade to his/her team at a time, with each team taking turns. I use a timer and the team that guesses, with the lowest time wins. Team picks a charade out of a hat.

I use this game to practice new vocab/grammar while recycling old vocab. and grammar.
When we do prepositions and places in the town, I will also incorporate animal vocabulary, sports, reflexive verbs or any other vocab that we use.
The boy brushes his teeth in the kitchen.
The cat plays baseball in the park.
The horse eats an apple at the bank.
The snake dances at the restaurant.
The girl talks on the phone at the basketball game.

Sometimes I have the opposing teams make the charades for each other, and I find that the students are usually more creative than I am. I check them for accuracy.

I always give advance warning when we will play the game and give them the topics that will be included in the game so they can look over old topics the night before. The game is very productive if I tell them in advance. Try this out!

Game: El rey o la reina necesita...
Target vocabulary: classroom objects
Level: elementary up to Spanish 1
Culture: Explain types of governments in this case: Kingdomes like in Spain and mamy other European countries.
The game begins with the teacher being the king or queen. The class is divided into two teams. The players are in the back of the room and the king seated in front. The king signals: El rey necesita un lapiz, un cuaderno, un borrador, una regla. If it it a bigger object they have to run to it and point at it or touch it. Whoever brings the object first gets a point and of course if it is the right object. We can play it in different ways and with different words, but the students love this with the class objects for the competition and the fun way of learning.

Game: Loteria
Level: lower levels
Target Vocabulary: numbers or any vocabulary group
Students fill in a 5x5 grid with numbers or a set of vocabulary words. They cover the number or word called out until covering 5 in a row. (an adapted form of Bingo)
The first to get five in a row, tells the words or numbers in Spanish. If they are correct, they get a prize. I usually have Mexican candies as prizes.

The game is called Ay Chihuahua. I have numbered categories that correspond to points, i.e. 100, 200, 300, 400, 500. Each category has 5 questions that are categorized according to difficulty with 500 points being the hardest questions. The class is divided into 5 equal teams. Each team sends 1 member per round who may choose the card of their choice, but each level can only be chosen once per round. Therefore, 5 people must choose a 1,2,3,4,5 hundred level question each round; If the 100 level question is taken, one of the other levels must be chosen. (You should see them run for the 100's and 500's!) The student must answer the question accurately. If he doesn't, the next person may answer correctly with 20 points deducted from original score. If all 5 playing team members cannot answer the question correctly, it goes back into the game. If the question is answered correctly, the team member scores the appropriated points for his team. THE FUN PART! There are randomly placed "¡Ay Chihuahua! cards instead of questions. If a student draws this card, the team loses all their points and must begin again. My students LOVE this game. I think they love it because ANYONE can win regardless of their level of skill. I usually use this game to review large units.
