Every year, Americans around the nation get together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th through October 15th. The contributions Hispanic Americans have made to the United States are endless and inspiring, and they have had a profound and positive impact on our county.

Back to school is just around the corner! Let's continue preparing with Step 5 of 8 Steps to a Productive Summer!

 

This week please share with us at least 1 example of a reading selection. A reading selection can include an online newspaper article, a poem, or your own work, just to name a few. Please source your reading selection. Include the following when sharing your reading selection:

  1. What level(s)?
  2. What is the target vocabulary?
  3. What is the target grammar?
  4. What is the cultural element?

This week's example is a piece by Salvador Dalí taken from our Español Santillana Series:

With this reading selection you can ask your students to do many things. For example, give your students this piece without the painting and have them draw out what they read. They can also write their own story using another painting.

Target grammar: at this level, I point out structures unusual to our "English" point of view
Cultural Elements: this is set in the future and is set all over the world (Iberia, Asia, Mediterranean, Moon colony, Mars colony), with characters from Iberia (Spain of the future), India, Africa, the moon: Food/ meals, arquitecture, art, urban planning, etc.

Target grammar: present tense, commands, direct and indirect objects.
Cultural Elements: discuss the importance of a second language and for those whose families are Latins, keeping the culture, mantaining the roots through the connections of different means of communications in this case the Spanish channels offered in this article. After discussing, the students can create their own ads involving an important cultural element or just for the lower levels use the imperative forms with direct and indirect objects.

A 3-4 day lesson:

1. Divide students into translating teams, a.k.a. T2’s.
2. Assign each team one section of the story, differentiated as necessary. (I usually do the reading sections on papelitos to avoid the “temptation” of looking at the whole story and sabotaging my lesson plan!) IMPORTANT! Allow students to only translate to the point where the river rat is killed!
3. To ensure that students stay on task and work quickly, I sometimes offer incentives. For example, 1st team to finish with the “teacher’s seal of approval” may get candy bars, down to the last team who may get Smarties.
4. Next, each team reads their translations. (Inevitably, the students are confused and find the story’s events peculiar and disturbing. ☺)
5. The students are then asked to combine their paired teams into groups of 4-6 people. They will then collaboratively reverse the main events of the story by re-writing them to have a positive outcome. These events include mama’s burned foot during the chaos of the morning, the dead cat, the 2 beggar-women, and the mob of boys killing a river rat.
6. Once the main events of the story are re-written to show a favorable outcome, the group members will act out the original scene as their teammates read both the Spanish and English translation and then the re-written scene with a different ending, also in Spanish and English.
7. Finally, the students finish reading the story on their own. (I love watching their faces light up when they realize what is happening in the story!)
8. Students are then asked to consider what each event might symbolize. (You can usually hear crickets in the back of the room at this point.)
9. Homework: Google Fidel Castro and be prepared to discuss your findings.
10. Re-postulate what each event in the story may symbolize. (Careful! Students will want to turn this into an English class!) They will inevitably pull in meaning for the Orient, colors, bridge, railing, mob mentality, etc. If we don’t know how to say something, we look it up!
11. Students will then answer questions about the story, such as ¿Por qué nos dice el narrador que podemos encontrar en la calle donde se le cayó el pastel? ¿Crees que el narrador dice la verdad? Explica. etc.
