Jorge Luis Borges: his life and work

By- Angela Padrón

Jorge Luis Borges is referred to by some as the Father of Latin Literature, due to his writing style of magical realism, which combined nineteenth century techniques with twentieth century visions. Borges was born on August 24, 1899 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and he wrote poems, essays, and short stories that are still considered classics today. Though Borges grew up in Argentina, his father, a teacher at an English school, taught him to speak and read in English before he learned Spanish. Borges was influenced early on by classic books found in his father’s library, including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, novels written by H.G. Wells, The Thousand and One Nights, and Don Quixote.

By Ángela Padrón.

Each year, many movies and plays are produced that are based on literature. In fact, more than two thirds of movies nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award have been derived from a book. So it’s no surprise that in the last year, several movies came out based on children’s books. One of the authors whose written words have come to life the most is Roald Dahl. From Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to The Fantastic Mr. Fox, to Matilda and James and the Giant Peach, Dahl’s fantastic and whimsical stories have shined on the big screen and stage for decades.

Praise for My Happy Life

If only all early chapter books were this beautifully conceived.
—Pamela Paul (NYT)

A chapter book about childhood depression paradoxically delivers a very happy reading experience.
—(Kirkus Reviews)

The clarity and simplicity of the writing are balanced by the verve and finesse of Eriksson’s captivating illustrations.
—(Booklist)

Lagercrantz knows how to engage children right off the bat . . . This is a sweet, but not saccharine, drama of friendship and family, a universal tale I’m happy to see available here for American readers.

La Bella y la Bestia

  Marie Leprince de Beaumont
La Bella y la Bestia
(Beauty and the Beast)

Beauty and the Beast is one of the most popular classic tales ever written. A beautiful young woman dreams of meeting a handsome prince, but to save her father’s life, she leaves home to live with a terrible, frightening beast. Though her patron is hideous, his disarming generosity slowly leads to asurprising connection. Generations of children have been fascinated by the story of the girl named Beauty, who grows to love a fearsome beast by learning to see and cherish his kindness, generosity, and intelligence.

A quarter-century on from the animated classic, Disney brings the lovely fantasy tale to life in live-action, with a widened mythology and an all-star cast. Directed by Oscar-winner Bill Condon, starring Emma Watson as Belle and San Stevens as the cursed Beast.
