Get to Know Bernardo de Gálvez tells the story of Teresa Valcarce, known in the book as Mary Activist, a young woman on a quest in the United States Capitol. The short story narrates Mary’s desire to achieve justice for Bernardo de Gálvez — a Spanish general who played a key role in the American Revolution, but who had been forgotten for hundreds of years — by hanging his portrait in the Capitol. Despite Gálvez’s brilliant efforts throughout the war, Congress failed to recognize and honor his accomplishments. For over 230 years, a promise to hang Gálvez’s portrait went unfulfilled. Finally, in 2014, President Barack Obama honored that promise and had the general’s portrait hung in the Capitol.
