Some of my students are fascinated by the Spanish language. Some of them want to travel the world with just a backpack or become the King of Bolivia, both of which they consider equally viable career options. (But I’ll take it, because at least they have aspirations, right?) Some of them have been preparing their college essays since they were four, and can cite Reasons Why You Must Learn Another Language as though it were some kind of creed they were meant to recite. (You know, along with Reasons Why I Should Study Math And Science And Not Humanities. Blerg.)
March, the saying goes, comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. From where I’m sitting, it can feel like a real bear sometimes, and other times my students just get downright squirrelly. We’re all over the map, you might say. Perhaps I should just post a map of the local zoo instead of my March calendar.
Getting kids motivated to learn anything nowadays is a challenge. They’re exposed to so many distractions on TV, the Internet, phones, video games – you name it. So how can you convince them that learning Spanish can be fun? Follow this old saying – show don’t tell!
