Gabriela Mistral nació en Vicuña, Chile, el 7 de abril de 1889, con el nombre de Lucila Godoy Alcayaga. A los pocos días de nacida, sus padres la llevaron a vivir abLa Unión y luego a Montegrande, su “amado pueblo”, ambos localizados en el valle de Elqui.  Su padre, Juan Jerónimo Godoy, era un maestro de escuela muy querido y de muchos dotes artísticos.

El General Simón Bolívar recibió el título de El Libertador por liberar del imperio español a un gran territorio que hoy ocupan seis países latinoamericanos: Venezuela, Colombia, Panamá, Ecuador, Perú y Bolivia. Su sueño era formar una confederación de naciones a la cual llamó La Gran Colombia, y de la cual fue presidente.
