Far out in the lonely Pacific Ocean, there is an island of mystery. The stone statues near the rocky shore stare out over the ever-changing and eternal sea. The people who carved them, and left them there, have vanished from the Earth. The secrets of Rapa Nui lie deep and hidden. This classic American novel tells the story of Hester Prynne, a young woman who has an illegitimate child. She is punished by having to wear the letter 'A,'  the mark of adultery. Hester and her daughter Pearl live as outsiders, but in contrast to the repressive Puritan community, they represent the forces of life, goodness, and forgiveness.
