The Florida Foreign Language Association and Santillana USA Publishing Co. invite K-12 foreign language students to participate in an essay contest. This essay contest is being launched in celebration of the National Foreign Language Week, March 3–9, 2008.

This year’s National Foreign Language Week theme is:

“You've Got The World on a String with Foreign Languages”
Santillana USA Publishing suggests essays based on the following titles available in both the original languages and English:

For grades K through 2: *La piñata Vacía (The Empty Piñata) w/audio cassette by Alma Flor Ada *Amigos or Zanmi (Friends) by Alma Flor Ada
For grades 3 through 5: *Azul y verde (Blue and Green) by Alma Flor Ada and Isabel Campoy
For grades 6 through 8: *El Vuelo del Quetzal (The Quetzal’s Journey)by Alma Flor Ada
For grades 9 through 12: Marianela by Benito Pérez Galdós
Concert en Bretagne (Concert in Brittany) by Cécile Talguen
(*) Also Available in English.
If requested, samples of the suggested titles will be sent to selected Florida School District Foreign Language supervisors and Foreign Language contact persons, or can also be obtained by contacting Santillana USA Customer Service Department.



Submission Requirements:

  • ONE (1) submission per student.
  • ALL entries must be e-mailed as an attachment to kucerikj@pcsb.org or mailed to:

  • Students must submit the attached cover sheet/consent form
    Kindergarten, first and second grade foreign language students may submit drawings inspired by the suggested literature readings.
  • Kindergarten: 1 drawing with 1-3 sentences (dictated by the applicant, and recorded
    by an adult)
  • First grade: 1 drawing with 3-5 sentences (dictated by the applicant, and recorded by an adult).
  • Second grade: 1 drawing with 3-5 sentences written by the student.
  • The sentences should be submitted on a separate sheet of paper.

    Be sure to note the name and relationship of the recording adult on the application for kindergarten and first grade


Essays (grades 3-HS) must:

  • Address the contest theme
  • Contain
    Elementary (Grades 3-5): between 100 and 150 words.
    Middle School: between 200-250 words
    High School: between 300-500 words
  • Be written in 12 pt. standard upright font (e.g. Times New Roman, Geneva, Helvetica)
  • Be double-spaced with one inch margins
    Note: Submissions can be written in English, French, Haitian-Creole or Spanish.

Prizes:
One (1) winner for elementary (K-5) and one (1) for secondary (6-12) will be selected and announced during the Joint ACTFL/FFLA Conference in November, 2008. Each of the two winners will receive one (1) laptop computer, provided by the contest sponsor, Santillana USA. The selected contributions will be published on the FFLA website (www.ffla.us) and in the FFLA newsletter (FFLAN). Selected winners will receive the award pending receipt of a signed parental consent form, and will be notified via phone or mail.
